Final Project: Stop Motion Animation

INSTRUCTIONS

Test Stop Motion

For this assignment, me and my partner first started brainstorming what the basic idea of our animation would be. We decided to focus it on climate change and started writing out the script.

After we finished our script, I began drawing the storyboard for the animation. We were advised that we should cut out some parts so that it wouldn't be too long.

Once our storyboard was done, we moved onto creating the puppet for the main character and all the props and background. We used modelling clay as our main medium. For the main character, we used wire and wrapped it with aluminum foil and then placed the clay on top.

For the wide shot, we made small paper origami cubes and drew on doors and windows. The background was blue paper with white modelling clay on top to act as clouds.

For the overhead shots, we really had to improvise since the tripod we were using couldn't be used for it, so we DIYed a phone holder so that the phone could rest and the lighting and composition wouldn't be really affected.

After all our clips were shot, we started combing all the photos together for each scene. Then, I compiled each scene together and adjusted the timing for a few of them. I also added three different background music to fit each point of the story, and then put a few sound effects in as well as the credits.

I also had to manually change the colours of a few scenes to match when the sky turned yellow by adjusting the colour wheels.

REFLECTION

My experience with this assignment was okay. I really don't enjoy creating frame by frame animation in general because of how tedious it is and it was worse trying to make a stop motion animation because it required us to really be careful not to change the focus on the camera and we had to make all the props. It was really difficult moving the puppet without smushing all the clay together and also trying to make her stand up by herself without falling in time for us to take a picture.

I observed that you should invest in a pretty good tripod that can handle any challenges and that is able to fulfil the kind of clips you want to shoot.I found that modelling clay is really, really waxy and sticky and if you leave it on paper for a while, all the oil will just be extracted from it. Furthermore, we were kind of limited in terms of colour choices with the clay.
