LECTURE

Week 1
This week we were introduced to the module and had a briefing on the MIB. Afterwards, Mr. Fauzi explained the first exercise. Sort the data then arrange it and present it visually. We were also briefed about the FLIP presentation and told that the final project is an animated infographic.

During our physical class, we made our groups and then worked on the first exercise. A few days before our next class, our group had an online meeting where we decided on a topic. We then created proposals for two topics; Ponzi Scheme & How Cats Were Domesticated.

Week 2
In this week, we had two lectures and then had some groups do their FLIP presentation.

Type of Infographics
They are highly effective at increasing engagement and capturing your audience's attention.

1. List Infographics
Informational graphic that uses a written list. Uses numbering and contextualising information with graphics.

2. Statistical Infographics
Includes pie charts, bar charts and any visual representation of data. Reel them into reading the information.

3. How To Infographics
Explain how to do something such as solving a problem or completing a task. Breaks the process down step-by-step.

4. Timeline Infographics
They are diverse in terms of their use. Uses icons and illustrations along the timeline to emphasise each point.

5. Comparison Infographics
Visual way to compare and contrast different information/opinions. Helps readers understand the distinction between various concepts.

6. Map/Location Infographics
Used extensively by companies and organisations. Can be used for a variety of reasons but tend to be used to communicate demographics data.

7. Flow Chart Infographics
Sequential graphical information of different steps or actions. Guides people individually through various steps and feels more personal to the reader.

8. Process Description Infographics
Describes the main elements and steps of processes. Communicates technical information that is useful for highlighting the most important steps.

L.A.T.C.H Theory
Stands for Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, Hierarchy.

1. Location
Technique of organising information based on its location. (Eg. Grab)

2. Alphabet
Organising information alphabetically makes it easier to group data.

3. Time
Uses temporal nature of content for organising information. Effective in social media where users like to know about recent events

4. Category
Frequently used technique of organising content on websites. Refers to any meaningful group, with reference to the website or the audience.

5. Hierarchy
Arranging information in any order (by color, shape etc).

During our physical class, we researched the topic we wanted to work on for the infographic poster. I had some trouble thinking about mine but I decided to go with the Hunger Games.

Week 3
In our lecture, we learned about Miller's Law and then had a couple groups present their FLIP presentation. Our tutorial and practical was held online this week. We consulted about our chosen poster that we wanted to redesign.

Miller's Law of Memory
Suggests how our short term memory is limited when it comes to remembering more than 7 pieces of information.

Week 4
During our online class, we went through some lecture slides. Afterwards, we had a couple of FLIP presentations

Manuel Lima's 9 Directives Manifesto
1.Form follows function
2. Interactivity is key
3. Cite your sources

8. Aspire for knowledge

INSTRUCTIONS

EXERCISE 1: QUANTIFIBLE INFORMATION
- Quantify raw data and visualise information as a photograph
- Bring your own set of objects and categorise them

During our tutorial and practical class, we sorted and arranged our objects. I decided to go with buttons that had different colors and designs.

Fig 1.1 - Selected Item

First I separated them according to their color.

Fig 1.3 - Final Sorted Buttons

Afterwards, I arranged them by their designs in each color.

Fig 1.4 - Arranged Buttons

Once that was done, I added the title and wrote how many buttons were in each category and how they were arranged.

Lastly, I made it look visually pleasing. I wanted it to look like the buttons fell out of their packaging and formed sort of a rainbow by using arcs and curves,

EXERCISE 2: L.A.T.C.H INFOGRAPHIC POSTER

Mr. Shamsul informed us that we could select our topic first and then conduct research for it. I was thinking on doing Pangea or Panem from the Hunger Games. In the end, I settled on creating a map of the 74th Hunger Games arena with a timeline of events that occurred inside it from the movie.

1. Location
- Game arena for the 74th hunger games.
- Location of where events occurred in the movie

Cornucopia:
- 1. Where all the tributes start off in the beginning of the games
- 6. Katniss blows up all the food and resources the careers gathered
- 9. Katniss gets medicine for Peeta
- 11. Katniss, Peeta and Cato run from the wolf Muttations
- 12. Katniss and Peeta are declared as the victors of the 74th Hunger Games

Forest:
- 2. Wall of fire, Katniss gets burned by a fireball
- 4. Stranded on a tree after being chased by the careers, Katniss drops a tracker jacker nest on the careers
- 5. Rue creates 3 fires to lure the careers away from the cornucopia
- 7. Rue dies and Katniss creates a 'funeral' for her
- 10. Peeta and Katniss come across nightlock berries

River:
- 3. The careers find Katniss and chase after her
- 8. Katniss reunites with Peeta

2. Time
- Lists the timeline of the events in the arena

3. Category
- Any events that took place in the same area will be grouped together.

4. Hierarchy
- Arrange information according to the events in the movie.

Then, I thought about a different topic as I wasn't quite sure how to lay out the timeline of the moving along with the location without it looking like a mess. I decided to plan out a timeline of events that lead to the Republic of Gilead from the Handmaid's Tale coming into power.

References:

Timeline of events that lead to the Republic of Gilead being established
From 1-8 (Alphabet);
1. Set in the United States (Location)
2. Struggles with infertility throughout the globe
3. Women's Rights movement are prominent
4. Counter movement Sons of Jacob stage a coup against the US government
5. Martial Law is declared
6. Women were banned from the workplace and denied money and property.
7. Hierarchy of power status (Hierarchy)
8. Gilead has control over each individuals speech

I designed the poster in Procreate as it was easiest for me. I placed a map of the united states and then added a circle on where the story of the Handmaid's Tale takes place along with some text. Then, I added the title. I decided to use a serif font and a cursive font for 'Gilead' as the story sort of reverts back to the older days.

Then, I added circles and lines in a zigzag to signify a timeline-like design. I wrote some descriptions under each headline and also added numbers in each circle. Afterwards, I added some graphics for each 'step' and edited them to look more cohesive with eachother.

Lastly, I added paper textures on top to make it look more like a poster.

REFLECTION

My experience with these tasks were quite positive. The first task was a little confusing at first since I wasn't sure what the difference between sorting and arranging was and what information to write down about the items but it was quite fun and a little therapeutic just laying everything out.

I did find making the illustrations on the infographic quite tedious to do and it took quite a while but I'm very happy with how it came out. I also learned a lot about how to fit a lot of info in such a small space through looking at a lot of references of timeline infographics.
