TASK 2 & 3

After a couple traumatising group experiences, I made a meeting minutes document for easy tracking and project management :D

Week 1:
- Create preliminary sketches for exhibition posters/banners

Design Team Notes:
- Poster, logo, bunting, individual graphic design for each specialisation
- Divide specialisations by color
- Black, white, red, yellow, blue, neon pink/purple, lime

By friday:
- Experiment with art direction
- 1 person work on logo
- 2 people on banner
- 2 people on poster

I chose to work on the logo/title design. I sketched everything out on my iPad and ended up with 2 logos that I felt looked best.

After a couple of days, the design team had a meeting to discuss the designs that we came up with and what art direction we wanted to go in. At first, we wanted to go for a more comic book style mixed with punk but we felt that punk was too hard to design and keep consistent. After a lot of discussion, we all agreed to design more posters and IG posts and explore different art directions to propose to Ms. Anis.

Week 2:
- Refine designs and discuss with supervisors on the final theme and art direction

I tried exploring more with the punk theme and created a poster. I won't lie, I struggled a lot with this.

At this point, the design team is really struggling with the spiderverse punk theme so we tried exploring more with differen sub-genres of spiderverse and I tried going back to our second theme choice which was '8-bit'.

I also tried making the 8-bit themed poster more chaotic and fit 'R!OT' more based on Ms Anis' feedback.

We also brainstormed a mascot and came up with a punk skull-cat. Top left is my design teehee

Derin then created more polished illustrations for the mascot for us to use in our explorations. I added the mascot 'breaking' out of the machine and messed around with the typography and colours more.

Week 3:
- Finalise theme
- Revamp mascot design to fit punk more
- Go back to the drawing board for punk

After exploring more with the typography and chaoticness for the poster, we pitched it to Dr. Luqman. However! it did not go well and the name of 'R!OT' with the art direction we had didn't make sense.

Therefore, we had to basically start over and research more into punk and punk designs. I compiled some references and listed out key features from each one.

We all also explored poster designs for punk rock.

Week 4:
- Brainstorm sticker and badge designs
- Breaking the THIRD wall

After consulting, it kinda feels like the poster is for a music-themed event due to the mascot's guitar. We then decided to focus more on the mascot interacting with the media around him to sort of resemble a 'riot'. We also brainstormed some merch design ideas for a totebag, socks, badge, sticker, guitar pic and cap.

Week 5:
- More brainstorming for merch and pitch designs to see which one the class likes more
- Start booklet design

I worked on the table of content design for the booklet.

Week 6:
- Finalise merch design
- Implement the merch design on mockups to visualise how it'd look

This week we just pitched all the progress we've made so far.

Week 7:
- Present progress
- Work on certificate design

After consulting about our progress, I was tasked with working on the certificate designs

Week 8:
- Pitch designs

Week 9:
- More design pitches

Week 10-12:
- Redesign certificate so it looks less like you're making a deal with the devil

I amended the certificate design so it wasn't completely black to save on ink and costs.

Week 13-14:
- Booklet design
- A1 board design
- Lanyard and sticker design

Since I was sick and couldn't join to work together with the other design team members for the booklet and A1 board, I was tasked with designing the lanyard and optional sticker for identification at the exhibition.

I reference this shopee store size for the lanyard

We also had to rush the booklet design and chase after people to submit their information.

REFLECTION

My experience with this module was...hectic to say the least. The first couple of weeks were unbelievably stressful but also kind of fun. I really liked exploring different design ideations and looking at references forever but our first theme of 'Spiderverse Punk' was really hard to work with. I was faced with a lot of new experiences and although I was constantly filled with anxiety over it and having to work even when I was out of KL for a wedding, I feel like I benefitted from it.

Although I was unsure about the punk theme at first, it really grew on me and I found myself really enjoying the messy and rough textures. I've done non-modern and scrappy work before but this really took it to a new level.

Working with the team was also really nice. After having a couple nightmare-ish experiences with group projects lately, I'm glad that I could have this one experience with people who were willing to put in the work. Our team leader definitely put in a lot of effort and was always responsive, I don't think we would be as organised if it weren't for her. It was also nice to be able to create a rough first draft and then have other people work on it to make it even better and vice versa. Being able to give and receive constructive feedback without any negativity was kind of heartwarming. I'm not sure how to describe it but it was like being understood and communicating in a different language. lol.

In summary, I'm really happy with all the work I've done and with all the work the design team has made. There isn't anything I regret.
